Why I’ll Never Get Into Politics

The more I read about politics and see it in the media, the more I realize it’s just not for me. Small local government seems okay, but running for president? No, thank you. Simply because to do so you have to:

  1. Sell your soul to the devil.
  2. Pucker those lips of yours to perform some major ass kissing.
  3. Have balls of steel for the inevitable attacks on your beliefs, patriotism, family, and faith.
  4. Be willing to walk over the necessary people to get to the top.
  5. Have a lot of money.
  6. Have a squeaky clean past.
  7. Be in control of what you say and do every hour of every day.
  8. Deal with the press.
  9. Deal with America.
  10. Deal with the um, World?

It’s just not my cup of tea. Being the president of the United States would be a wonderful opportunity to do some good, yes, but the system is so corrupted I wouldn’t waste my time. And then you have to clean up Bush’s mess, be constantly watched and compromised, deal with world issues and pretend to care, and all for $400,000 a year. I’d rather do other things like catch up on my DVR’s, brush my husband’s face, paint, read a book, and live my very simple (anonymous) life. At least I’d enjoy it.

i know, can you believe it? that the president only makes around $400k a year? that’s insane. i can’t believe that sports stars, movie starts, singers, etc. make more than our PRESIDENT. man. it’s so not even worth it. i hear ya. i wouldn’t ever want to run for president.

Politicians rarely have a squeaky clean past. Very, very rarely. :P And whilst there are downsides there is that aspect that, you know, you’re actually doing something with your life. You could help people if you want to. Instead of saying, “I’d like x, y, z to happen” you could actually make it happen for once.

Heh, most presidents have earned money before they get to the position. I think the lower salary is a good idea, so that you’re doing it for the country and not for the money. ^_^

But yeah, having the spotlight on you 24/7 kinda sucks.

Some people have the yearn for it ... others not. :D Nothing wrong with not wanting to be in government / president. I think at times being President of the US is more easier than being head of some of the agencies under, since they have to be so much more specialized rather than just a monkey on TV. Haha. T_T

But you get fame, respect and so much more.

If there was some way of entirely bypassing the insanely long election process to get immediately into office, as well as the whole “you have to be born in America” thing, I would happily become the American President. Power is such an aphrodisiac.

If George W. Bush became president of the United States, not once—TWICE—the dream remains open to anyone. Once you hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up! SARAI 4 PREZ!!11~

I have never wanted to be prime minister, nor will I ever WANT to be… I hate public speeches.

I would never want to be the Prime Minister of Canada. Personally the cons outway the pros for me. I understand that in that position someone can do some good, but really how often does that happen? I honestly can’t believe that the president only gets $400 000 though! :o

With all the emotional burden, I can’t imagine anyone wanting to be a nation’s leader unless they 1) genuinely want to bring change or 2) stupidly aims high 3) is a psychopath. I think that about covers all the US presidents past and present.

What annoys me the most about presidental campaigns is that the candidates spend MILLIONS AND MILLIONS. And then turn around and talk about how they care about American people? How they want to fix things? How they want to make things better for poor people? How they want to fix the healthcare system, whatever? OKAY SO USE THOSE MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT YOU SPENT ON THOSE ADS THAT NO ONE PAYS ATTENTION TO ANYWAYS AND FIX THINGS!!!!

Haha, I’m a political science major and I would NOT want to EVER run in my case, prime minister! No no way. I much rather influence peoples lives some other way, a way where there isn’t so much pressure.

You make very plausible arguments. We have had presidents that really made this country something, but then we, the people, were let down, again.

I suppose being guaranteed to have your face in history books is a plus.

Like you, I’d rather fulfill other aspirations. I enjoy being a mere citizen.

I agree! I’m only thirteen, so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting into politics or not for a while, but I agree with your arguments. I’d really rather do other things, politics just isn’t for me, either.
