This Twitter thing

It confuses me. You create an account, and almost immediately you can update the world on whatever you’re doing at that exact moment. It sounds like a pretty good idea in theory, but it failed to remind me that the web is full of boring people.

I was browsing Twitter yesterday, looking at other people’s tweets, and I kept reading “updates” such as (and these are actual tweets):

  • “face book checking time!!! woot”
  • “Feral cat at one oclock eating a dead bird. He sees me. I see him. We watch eachother.”
  • “feeling a little hot and bothered . . . I need a damn drinkie!”
  • “Sha la la Sha la la”
  • “cooking yellow organic carrots...we will see how well Josh likes them.”
  • “On the phone.”
  • “* drops phone in the toilet * NOOOO! :-)”
  • “Looking for gummy bears”

Just what?! Looking for gummy bears? Really? What is there to say to that? “Gee, I’m sorry, I wish I could reach through my screen and help yo--” No. Just no.

I like the Twitter idea, don’t get me wrong, I actually made one myself because I thought it was a neat concept. But when I was browsing the twitters above, it was all I could do from closing my browser altogether to go weep for these people.

When I read what Twitter was about I got really excited. I wanted to read random, thought-provoking, funny, interesting, make-me-get-to-know-you-better Twitters! Isn’t that the point? Maybe I’m missing it.

I was only able to find two Twitterers (ererers?) so far who put some effort into their tweets, which gave me hope. When I stumble on some more interesting Twitters, I’ll make a list here, just so I can remind myself that no matter what, there is still a few who shine amidst the fail.

P.S. Random, but I got a Technorati Profile.

I know some interesting people on Twitter. Tweets tend to be interesting when you can think of something to say in response. If you sit there and see yourself reading a tweet and saying “um… what?” or “um… and?” then it’s probably not a good tweet.

I don’t think people got the memo that NO ONE CARES ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE DOING AT EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY. Why aren’t they using their twitters to make observations about life? Why aren’t they trying to be witty, why aren’t they trying to be interesting? You can’t fit a lot in a few words, but I have to respect the people who manage to evoke some kind of emotion (whether it be laughter, tears or anger) in their twitters.

I, too, like the concept of Twitter, but much like Myspace and Facebook the idiots have descended upon it and turned it into a mockery of what it could have been.

Brb, goin’ to Mcdonald’s ya’ll.

^ If no one cares what you’re doing, then why do you have a twitter account? o_O

@ Rachael - I think she means no one cares what you’re doing if you’re not interesting.

Also, I don’t get those twitters that feel to the need to update every 2 minutes.

“ Just woke up”
“Just ate bread”
“Just took a mean shit”

We get it. You do normal things everyone else does...NEXT.

With that said, I don’t think my random tweets are all that interesting so I’ll just shut up now. =x

I hate seeing “Going to bed”, “Just woke up”, etc. It’s so annoying.

I only tweet interesting things. :P

i don’t understand how people talk to each other on twitter. @this person @that person.

hope nobody is talking to me on there because i wouldn’t notice.

I agree that “eating supper,” “going to bed,” etc., is boring, but I like twitters like “looking for gummy bears.” I guess I’m just a random person, and the random little details that you don’t hear often amuse me. And they certainly beat all the emo twitters that think they’re being so poetic when they’re really being vague and stupid.

Oh yeah, my tweets are SO BORING. I don’t know why my friends put up with me. :P

lmfao I literally laughed at the “Sha la la Sha la la” one. I am guilty of some pointless/boring tweets, but I try not to. Some people do it ALL THE TIME, and that does get annoying. I also hate people that tweet every 5 seconds. It’s really unnecessary.

So did you look up South Pacific? What did you think of it? I think it’s one of those things that people either really love or cannot stand. Come to think of it, that kind of applies to Twitter too! *snap*

Seriously, you must lose a LOT of time if you have to type out every single thing you’re doing before or after actually doing it.

On a sidenote, I ADORE this layout.

It’s bad enough that people email me every second of every day, I don’t think I want people knowing when I’m on the crapper or doing something inane and pointless. Much like MySpack and FaceBoobs I have resisted the “temptation” (hah) to join twitter.

I like the concept but I never really get what to use it for. Maybe because it doesn’t require that much effort like writing a blog, people just abuse it. lol… but this one… sounds very psycho lol

Why do people use Twitter if they have nothing to say?  The answer, because they can.  I haven’t looked through Twitter much because of that.  If it’s not interesting I don’t really want to read it.  I also noticed the same person complaining about how stupid and boring peoples tweets are is the same person who has boring ass tweets.

yeah, i know what you mean. my twitter is all stupid right now ‘cuz i got lame and lazy about it. ah, well. i’ve found some pretty funny twitter accounts. of course, dooce’s, being one of them. haha. great.

I think you missed most of what I said. “No one cares what you’re doing at every second of every day.”

Posted by Becky on April 04, 2008

the worst twitterers are the ones who use it to announce that they posted a blog entry at their blog… LAME. although my own personal use of it as a repository for song lyrics i get stuck in my head is equally lame, so i shouldn’t talk… (i just really like that i can text twitter and have it get posted, because i have an ancient cell phone that doesn’t have internet or anything on it.)

I think many people use Twitter for things they want to share with others but things that aren’t worth blogging about. I’ve never browsed Twitter to see what others have to say, I mainly use it on my site, just for fun. I think Twitter is handy when you have a website or if you want to put a Twitter widget on one of those community sites (Hyves, Facebook, Bebo, whatever).

I think twitter/pownce/jaiku etc are developed with the mind that friends will be using them together. On facebook when you update your status with something silly - at least one person will get it, but on twitter, no one will because their probably not your ‘friend’.

^ That’s a cute little video that help explains the purpose of twitter. Thought you might be interested.

It’s funny you know; Thoughts people keep to themselves are becoming available to the public.

I’m ok with using Twitter to post “I just found out an amazing fact” or other kinds of interesting things. But why does the world need to know all of one’s mundane daily activities?

Posted by Louise on April 08, 2008

I love my twitter lol. I make pretty random posts.. sometimes it’s what I’m doing, sometimes its a random observation, sometimes it’s something stupid. It’s kind of fun.
