This Entry Is All Over The Place

It’s safe to say that college is kicking my ass right now. I’m taking a few health-related classes (Anatomy and Physiology being one of them) and preparing for these classes while going to work part-time is becoming a challenge. I need to start getting into a routine so that I won’t feel so overwhelmed, because at this rate I will end up cutting someone out of pure frustration.

I went to return a medical dictionary at this local bookstore affiliated with my school yesterday and the store clerk could only buy it back for $13 dollars. Considering I paid almost $40 dollars for it, I was not pleased. eBay will end up saving my ass once again. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous how these publishers are raping poor college students with expensive textbooks just because it’s a “new edition” which is code for “We added a few pictures and because of that the page numbers are all off.” It boggles my mind how they can get away with that.

I started reading The Handmaid’s Tale and I’m almost done with Emma by Jane Austen. If I’m ever to finish the 28 Books in 2008 challenge I seriously need to up my game. I need suggestions for books, so if you know of any good ones, please let me know. Just don’t recommend Twilight.

Completely random but I just deleted about a hundred updates from my Twitter because I felt 90% of the updates were either pointless, stupid, or things no one should have to read, ever. Does anyone else delete updates sporadically like this from their social profiles? Maybe it’s just me.

Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin is a really good book :) It’s set in the early Middle Ages so you’ll have to like that kind of thing, but it’s still a great book :)

Good luck with classes!

Yeah, I delete meaningless shit I posted there. I delete everything, and right now I’d like to delete myself, or better or hibernating like a bear. My courses at univ are killing me and why the hell did I say yes to having two jobs? Kick me please!

Read The Samurai’s Garden and The Street of a Thousand Blossoms by Gail Tsukiyama. Those are two of my absolute favorite books - better than Memoirs of a Geisha, imo. I would read The Street of a Thousand Blossoms first, just because that’s the one I read first, and I found it more immediately accessible than The Samurai’s Garden. Both are gorgeous books and I know you like history/historical fiction.

Emma is such love.

I’ll have to agree with Carly ^ All Gail Tsukiyama novels are absolutely beautiful. If you’re in the mood for mindless entertainment (more Regency/Austen-esque romances), then Georgette Heyer novels are fantastic as well.

I just got my textbooks today and all of the classes I am required to take (Art History, Advertising & French) costed me about $125-$145 per book. I heard they have those digital textbooks now, I wonder if they are cheaper.

And as far as books go, Read “Snow Flower & The Secret Fan” by Lisa See and “The Alchemist"/"The Witch of Portobello” by Paulo Cohelo. Paulo is an amazing author, I loved the Alchemist. It was moving.

Good Luck with classes and your part-time job. I know you’ll kick butt.

Now that you talk about deleting stuff, I never do.  I’m hardly on Twitter (thanks to Twitterfox and Plurk) to really notice.

College kicking your ass? I hear that’s what it likes to do XD

I’m very behind on my 28 books in 2008 challenge too. I’m not even half way there, and 2008 is more than half gone. I wish it were because I don’t know what to read next, I actually have a pile there waiting to be read. But yeah, college, ass-kicking.

Maybe if you want to read something in Spanish before the year ends, I recommend “La vida es sueƱo” by Pedro Calderon de la Barca. That is if you haven’t read it yet, I believe it’s a well known book :)

I suggest Weslandia by Paul Fleischman! It’s a children’s book, but it’s still one of my favourites :D.

I loved The Handmaid’s Tale! I have a thing for totalitarian dystopian novels (hence the wanting to hump Orwell’s 1984). Along the same lines… A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is a nice read. Any novel or short story collection by Colm Toibin is good too, if you’re looking for a more general kind of fiction (I recommend The Blackwater Lightship and Mothers And Sons, particularly).

As for Twitter, I hardly delete my updates… although I seldom update to begin with. :P

You should probably realize any college bookstore is going to mark up the cost of the book 35-45%.  And they’re going add the cost of shipping to the book. If you want to find used copies of your textbook, try any nebraska book company affiliated bookstore.  Nebraska runs most top university bookstores btw. So maybe you can find a used copy of your textbooks through them.

And to be honest, it might suck that we all have to pay so much money for some college textbooks.  But it’s a small price to pay for a degree that will bring a much higher return then the amount of money you paid for books.  And you’re lucky to be able to get any money back IMO.  Book Buy Back is a courtesy.  I’m not trying to be a bitch or anything but it’s just my perspective haha.

Hi, I’m just a wanderer.
But, as for book recommendations? My absolute favorite is Lolita by Vladmir Nobokov, sadly. I mean, its a romance novel through and through, and Humbert truly loves and adores his lolita, it simply just isn’t for the sex. He loves her. Its sad in a sick strange way.
I just started college and actually, my textbooks weren’t all too expensive, less than a $150 this semester. But yeah. As if all of the school funds aren’t enough they have to squeeze every single penny out of us. Damn those money hungry fiends. But… thats the price for higher education?

I paid $330 for one set of books and $200 for one other book. Mhm. My mom was like, “aw, I’m so glad I sent you to go off and get educated… NOT.” Our prof for the class that has the $200 book told us that the reason for the price hike is because the author’s biggest competition is used copies of his own book. Therefore, he comes out with a new edition every year.

For books, I’m reading this book called A Prayer for Owen Meany by Jon Irving, it’s really good, and it’s actually pretty funny. I also, really liked The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, both are books I had for summer reading, and really ended up liking a lot. As far as that college textbook thing goes, I know, it’s ridiculous, as if starting college and basically have negative money isn’t enough.. anyways.
Goodluck with college and your 28 books challenge!
